Video: Reducing Sodium Levels in the Diet

In June 2016, FDA issued a draft guidance to the food industry calling for voluntary sodium reduction in processed and commercially prepared foods.

Consumption of excess sodium and salt has been in the crosshairs of the medical community and regulatory agencies for decades due to its association with numerous health conditions, including heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. In fact, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine found 99.2 percent of the global adult population exceeded the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 2,000 mg of sodium per day. In this video, we examine why consumers are seeking out product categories that are low in sodium and free from overly processed ingredients, and how brands are answering those demands.
