Europeans eye clean-label sweetener alternatives

Europeans’ preferences for how products are sweetened sound a lot like the preferences of Americans. Europeans increasingly are seeking products with no added sugar, and they want clean-label sweetener alternatives, meaning ingredients they recognize, said Emma Schofield, senior analyst for global food science for Mintel, in a recent presentation at Food Ingredients Europe in Paris. European consumers might accept taste sacrifices in products perceived as healthy such as yogurt drinks, but not accept taste differences in indulgent categories like chocolate bars, cakes and ice cream. Cargill expands commitments on climate change, fortifies support for Paris Agreement

Minnetonka-based Cargill Inc. committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its entire supply chain—from farm fields to fast-food kitchens—by 30% per ton of product in the next decade. The commitment follows a contentious summer when Cargill faced severe activist criticism for its presence as a soy trader in Brazil. This new target, known as a Scope 3 goal, encompasses the emissions from Cargill’s suppliers and customers and is relative to how much food is produced. It will be added to Cargill’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 goals outlined last year to reduce emissions produced by its own processes and energy purchases by 10%. Read more at Star Tribune

Nielsen: Which sustainability attributes matter most to consumers?

Consumers are increasingly factoring a product’s sustainability attributes into their purchasing behavior, and 73% of consumers surveyed by Nielsen say they are willing to change their consumption habits to reduce their environmental impact. Nielsen analyzed consumers’ attitudes toward various sustainability attributes across 13 product categories. Overall, they identified “environmentally friendly” and “recycled packaging” as the top two attributes they are willing to pay extra for. Read more at Foodnavigator

Chew on this: Farmers are using food waste to make electricity

If you piled up all the food that's not eaten over the course of a year in the U.S., it would be enough to fill a skyscraper in Chicago about 44 times, according to an estimate from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And, when all this food rots in a landfill, it emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. In fact, a recent report from the United Nations from a panel of climate experts estimates that up to 10 percent of all human-made greenhouse gas emissions are linked to food waste. U.S. caloric sweetener deliveries continue to decline on a per capita basis driven by lower high fructose corn syrup use

Caloric sweetener use in the United States has been declining steadily on a per capita basis since reaching a peak in 1999. Caloric sweeteners include refined sugar from sugarbeets and sugarcane, corn sweeteners, honey and edible syrups. However, despite the overall decline in total domestic deliveries—which represent shipments to downstream food and beverage manufacturers and retail distributors—refined sugar deliveries per person have been trending upward since 2008 and the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement sweetener provisions with Mexico. This increase was primarily at the expense of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), the predominant corn sweetener. Read more at USDA Amber Waves

FI Europe 2019: Clean label trend prevalent across industry

Industry leaders across sectors are ensuring that their offerings address the clean label trend. This was apparent at the recent trade show Food Ingredients 2019 in Paris, where companies were showcasing their clean label offerings. People are increasingly turning toward ingredients perceived as being more natural, with a 2019 Innova Market Insights consumer survey highlighting that two in three global consumers specifically want to avoid products with ingredients that are difficult to understand.
